Hey peeps!! Welcome to your mini music playlist— the article addition! So, this article is actually in connection to the article I’m posting on Valentines Day. I’m warning you now, the article being posted on Wednesday is a little long and a bit of a doozy, but you definitely do need to read what I wrote. It’s a lesson on love that I was still learning even as I wrote it.

The music in this article will put you in the right mood to read my little letter to love.Ā  I need you to listen to these songs so you can really hear where I’m coming from. I don’t want to give too much context of this article away, it’s a bit of a surprise, but I do want you to consider this: that the soulmate complex is so much deeper than romantic relationships. Consider your friends, families, and even your pets as soulmates. Learn to show them love on Valentine’s Day. Let’s steer away from the idea that platonic love is not worth celebrating or that you don’t deserve to self worship.

  1. On My Momma x Victoria Monet

Because there’s nothing like the love of a mother, so this song comes first in the list. It’s a metaphor for how the child also becomes the mothers first priority. Remember this— it’s important. Think about this during the weekend. We’ll go deeper into this concept next week.Ā

  1. The Letter x Kehlani

This is fitting for two reasons: 1) because my next article is a letter, and 2) because even though I thankfully can’t really relate to the story behind the lyrics, I can still feel Kehlani’s pain. She poured her heart and soul in this song. This song is a reminder of the reality that we all do not live the same life, so we must try our best to be kind. We don’t always know peoples stories. Some people do not have the traditional love of the biological mother or father for their own personal reasons. I chose this song for the playlist because I want you to know you that regardless of who your support system is, you are loved. Whether that love is from a bio mom, step mom, grandma, aunt, sister, friends mom, or even self… you are still loved, validated, seen, and heard.Ā So get your tissues! This song will def make even the toughest people shed a tear.

  1. Catch A Falling Star x Perry Como

I added this song because me writing a love letter for my Valentine’s Day article is SOOO Princess Mia coded (maybe even a little Lily Coded— we know she loved reporting the scoop!). Plus, this is the song Mia sings literally right before she finds out she’s a princess. Because of this, it’s poetic in a way, and it’s a musical metaphor for my next article. So definitely add this to your Valentines Day playlist.Ā

  1. Doo Wop, That Thing x Lauryn Hill

Do you feel like you need to have a talk with your inner child about what love is and what it looks like? If the answer is yes, then listen to this song. It’s literally going to put you in the school of life and teach you some things. You just have to listen. She gets real about what she thinks love and life really is— and you know what else? She doesn’t discriminate.

  1. A Teens – I Can’t Help Falling In Love (Lilo and Stitch Version)

I explore the concept of doing hobbies you used to enjoy as a child as a means of connecting to love and happiness in Wednesday’s article. I discuss the inner child dreams as an adaptation of the first love. So after you have that talk with your 7, 8, 9, 10 year old self at end of Doo Wop (That Thing), play the pop version to Elvis Presley’s ā€œI Can’t Help Falling In Love.ā€ This is personally one of my favorite songs from childhood, and the only version to this song that I acknowledge lol! It’s from one of my favorite movies, Lilo and Stitch! Whenever I need to stimulate my sacral chakras and get in touch with my inner child, this is what I sing! It’s a representation of the first love. The puppy love. Listen to this so you can really hear what I hear. As a matter of fact, just watch the video so you can see where I’m coming from too.

(Plus’s the A Team ATE! That’s why that’s the first three letters in their name).Ā

  1. How To Love x Lil Wayne

This song had a CHOKE HOLD on me in 2011. Like wtf did I know about ā€œhow to loveā€ somebody at 13?? Lol! I sang this song with a soul that lived a thousand lives 🤣 But Lil Wayne asked the question that we’ve all been trying to answer, especially now with Valentines Day on the way. He sings of a very important love that we discuss in my article— the love of self.Ā

  1. Everything is love x Londrelle

I LOVE Londrelle. His energy is so calming. You can tell he’s been here many lives, and that he’s loved many times. He is one of my favorite gurus for guidance. He speaks with love, patience, and kindness. And if you ask Londrelle, he’ll tell you that everything is love. Art is love. Animals are love. Flowers are love. Music is love. We are love.

  1. Where You Belong x Kari Kimmell

Speaking of love being patient and kind, chick out ā€œWhere You Belongā€ by Kari Kimmell. If you were a The Fosters fan, then you already know this song!! It was the theme song to a show about love being infinite. Whether it’s love from a foster parent or adoptive parent, or LGBTQP+ representation, this show showed all the different ways we can love. And yet ironically, it deserved WAY more love in of itself, so let’s give it some.Ā

  1. Lost Souls x Baby Kim ft. Brent Faiyaz

I added this song for all the lost souls still trying to find themselves and figure out how to love. Don’t worry, love. This is something we’re all trying to figure out.Ā

  1. What is Love x Haddaway

I just automatically say ā€œbaby don’t hurt meā€ even when I’m rhetorically asking myself ā€œwhat is love?ā€ It would be a crime not to add this to the play list.Ā

  1. Diary x Alicia Keys

You ever love someone so much that you want them to tell you everything, and you always want to know how you’re feeling or how you can make them feel better? Then this song is for you! Check out Diary by Alicia Keys. I also love how this song is a double entendre, it could be about a lover, but in black communities, we use ā€œdiaryā€ as a term of endearment for all the people we love. We may call our cousins, siblings, or best friend our ā€œdiaryā€ to show the close connection we have with them. So here’s one to you and your ā€œdiary.ā€

Keep this song in mind for the article dropping Wednesday, okay? 🫣 it’s important!Ā

  1. First Class x Jack Harlow

Now this song actually should’ve been first considering that the whole next article is about catching flights AND feelings (plus “first” is in its name), but let’s go ahead and put it last cause Victoria Monet just got her first Grammy. Like helloooooo! Yasssss queen! And plus, it’s black history month (haha! Sorry Jack Harlow). But go ahead and give this song a listen because Valentines Day is coming up and I want you to feel GLAMOROUS! Listen to this song and think about catching flights, and think about someone you caught feelings for.

And I’ll catch you guys on Wednesday, February 14th, for the Valentine’s Day article. It’s a love letter, from me to you!

Love you bougie bruja babies 😘
